Lieutenant General George Washington is an 1860 equestrian statue of George Washington, at Washington Circle, at the edge of the George Washington University 's campus, in Washington, D.C. As the leader of the first successful revolution against a colonial empire in world history, Washington became an international icon for liberation and nationalism, especially in France and Latin America. This statue depicts Washington in his military uniform as he faces the British troops. The equestrian statue of George Washington at Washington Circle was sculpted by Clark Mills and unveiled on February 22, 1860, Washington’s birthday. It was one of the earliest public monuments in the capital and the first equestrian statue cast in bronze in the U.S. Below the Pilgrim Steps, across Pilgrim Road, stands the bronze statue of George Washington on horseback. The statue, sculpted by Herbert Haseltine in 1959, is mounted on a pink granite pedestal and marks the upper entrance to the Olmsted Woods.
