How can we protect grizzly bears from their biggest threat—trains? Railways are a magnet for hungry grizzlies in their critical habitat along the Continental Divide. Since 1991, BNSF has acknowledged that its freight trains between Shelby and Trego pose an inherent threat to the grizzlies living nearby, dozens of which have been killed due to train. Parks Canada has confirmed that three grizzly bears have died as a result of being hit by a train. That has one conservationist and well-known wildlife photographer calling for more to be. Railways are a major source of direct mortality for many populations of large mammals, but they have been less studied or mitigated than roads.
