TWELVE-TIME NCAA ALL-AMERICAN; TEN-TIME BIG TEN CHAMPION – 200 YARD BACKSTROKE (1980, 81, 82), 100 YARD BACKSTROKE (1981, 82), 200 YARD INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY (1981, 82), 400 YARD FREESTYLE RELAY (1981, 82) AND 800 YARD FREESTYLE RELAY (1982); MEMBER OF TWO BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS (1981, 82); AND SET AND STILL HOLDS FIELD HOUSE POOL RECORD IN 400 YARD AND 800 YARD FREESTYLE RELAYS. Sports: Track Inducted: 1989 Track 1929-30; 1932 Olympic champion in 110 meter high hurdles at 1932 Los Angeles Games; broke two world records and new Olympic record; NCAA champion, all-American, and AAU national champion in 120 yard high hurdles in 1932; Big Ten indoor champion in 70 yard high hurdles in 1932; and captain of 1932 track team. Iowa’s first all-American swimmer (150 yard backstroke) in 1922; national age-group record holder in backstroke at age of 73; only man to follow Iowa’s competitive swim program throughout its 77 year history; for 30 years official bell ringer signaling start of Iowa’s home meets; and named in his honor the Irving B. Weber Walkway of Champions in Iowa Field House and Irving B. Weber Elementary school in Iowa City.
